Now in its 22nd year, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) has once again proven why it’s considered the gold standard in global wine competitions. With entries from over 50 countries and a judging panel comprised of the world’s top sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and critics, the 2025 edition continued its legacy of spotlighting excellence, craftsmanship, and innovation in winemaking. The Australian contingency made a powerful showing, especially from our little boutique wine region of Beechworth, which continues to gain international momentum.
We had three entries from Beechworth, and they were among this year’s top performers. Leading the charge was Brokenwood’s 2023 Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay, awarded a Platinum medal and an outstanding 97 points. This complex, expressive white wine captivated judges with its elegant balance of vibrant citrus, fine oak integration, and a long, mineral-driven finish. It’s a clear standout in a category known for fierce global competition. Also drawing attention were two impressive offerings from Granjoux Wines, reinforcing Beechworth’s reputation as a hotbed for cool-climate Shiraz:
- Granjoux 2021 Shiraz received a Silver medal and 92 points, praised for its refined structure, spice-laced palate, and aging potential.
- Granjoux 2022 Amphora Shiraz, a more experimental, amphora-aged expression, earned a Bronze medal with 88 points, reflecting growing interest in natural and minimal-intervention styles.
The success of these wines is more than just a win for individual producers – it’s a tribute to Beechworth’s unique terroir and the vision of its winemakers. Ensconced in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, the region’s cool climate, granitic soils, and altitude create ideal conditions for producing expressive, age-worthy wines that continue to impress on the world stage.
The DWWA are more than just medals – it’s global endorsements. Wines awarded at DWWA enjoy heightened consumer trust, better shelf visibility, and increased export opportunities. For Australian wineries, and especially for niche regions like Beechworth, recognition at this level offers invaluable momentum in both domestic and international markets.
The 2025 DWWA results reaffirm what insiders have known for years: Australian wines, and particularly those from regions like Beechworth, are not only holding their own globally, they’re leading in innovation and quality. With successful entries over the years from Savaterre, Glenbosch, Redbank, Brokenwood, and Granjoux, Beechworth fruit continues to set the bar high, and there’s never been a better time to explore what Beechworth has to offer.
